Festivids 2023
Oct. 21st, 2023 01:48 pmDear festividder/potential treatmaker:
Rebecca Ferguson RPF:
You probably know her best as the enigmatic Ilsa Faust in the Missions: Impossible, Lady Jessica in Dyyuunnee (that's how I pronounce Dune), or perhaps as Rose the Hat in Doctor Sleep. Or maybe you were introduced to her way back when in 2013 in The White Queen (some of these titles you'll find again later on in this letter...). But, Festividder, have you ever watched an interview with this woman? Or seen how she is on a red carpet? I say this in the most loving way possible - she's the most ridiculous person on this Earth, and also a strong contender for one of the most beautiful. If you didn't love her from her performances already (she is Hollywood's "stealth MVP" after all), you'll absolutely fall in love with her after going down the YouTube rabbit hole of press tours and junkets and interviews.
The Fall of the House of Usher (TV 2023):
As a fan of Mike Flanagan, his latest (and last for Netflix) horror series is up there with my favorites of his. A mean, fun, and really quite funny adaptation of several Edgar Allan Poe stories featuring an absolutely stacked cast. I would enjoy a vid about basically anything this show has to offer, for real. (I will add, I do have a soft spot for Carla Gugino's Verna, and Madeline throughout the years.)
Doctor Sleep (2019) [SAFETY]:
Mike Flanagan's adapation of Stephen King's The Shining sequel. The synthesis of both Kubrick's classic film and Uncle Steve's novels feels like a miracle to me. The Director's Cut is the one to watch. Rebecca Ferguson's performance as Rose the Hat (who has never done anything wrong, not once in her 700+ year life) is mesmerizing. It underperformed at the box office, so if you haven't gotten a chance to discover this movie on streaming, now's the time. A vid about the movie as a whole, a thematic study, or just Rose the Hat saying "hi, there" for a minute straight...anything goes!
A career best performance from Cate Blanchett, and an incredible portrait of a complex and glorious character. There are so many layers in this movie to mine, and each watch reveals something new. A vid peeling back the many fascinating layers of actual real person Lydia Tár in this incredible, definitely a true story biopic would be amazing.
Dead Ringers (2023 TV):
TWO RACHEL WEISZES. Enough said, really. This is an updated take on the Cronenberg film, and yes, the show includes plots and all the body horror that that name invokes. It's one of the best recent streaming TV series out there, and honestly it's kind of incredible it even exists. A vid about the relationship between the Mantle twins would be amazing.
Silo (TV):
Based on a novel trilogy, Silo focuses on the inhabitants of, like it says on the tin, an underground silo with over a hundred levels. It's a part-time murder mystery, part-time what-is-going-on-outside-the-silo mystery, part-time examination of a dystopian society, and full-time opportunity to watch Rebecca Ferguson giving one of her career best performances to date. I guarantee you will fall in love with Juliette Nichols, a mechanic from the down deep who winds up becoming the silo's sheriff in an effort to solve her lover's murder, an investigation that winds up providing answers and even more questions about the world in which she lives. The world-building gets increasingly fun as the season progresses, and the story is straightforward in a good way, well-told and exciting. A shout out from this neurodivergent viewer that while it's not stated explicitly in canon, Silo features a female lead character on the autism spectrum in Jules, and I could not love this character more if I tried. Also, Harriet Walter is here and her relationship with Jules is so fantastic. Please make all the Jules vids in the world, thank you! [But also a general vid for the series would also be great! Happy about all of it. Would also not say no to a Jules/Shirley vid, though you might struggle to hit that 1:00 minimum. :)]
The White Queen (TV)
I'm throwing it back to the first thing I ever saw Rebecca Ferguson in (not counting one episode of Wallander years before where she has no lines), and the first thing I feel in love with her in with this request. I'm a nothing if not sometimes a sucker for a sexy historical drama with occasional dashes of witchery. And when I say sexy, I will add that if you're acquiring this series for viewing and/or vidding purposes, be sure to get the Starz version, not the BBC version, for no reason at all. No reason.
Reminiscence (2021) [SAFETY]
Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, really pretty people, really gorgeous visuals, and I don't want to oversell as it's not the greatest movie ever made, but did I mention how beautiful it is to look at? It's a fun watch and has interesting ideas to chew on. Weird post-apocalyptic noir future complete with a sad man doing a voiceover! The people! So pretty! I think the visuals in this film would make a stunning vid.
The Newsreader (TV 2021)
ANNA TORV! Reading the news! With Sam Reid! In 1980s Australia! This is a great, under the radar show and the main characters are absolute messy messes. And did I mention the 80s? That means outfits. Highly recommend the watch.

MAMMOTH CLUB (YOUTUBE CHANNEL):
Mammoth Club is a YouTube channel/social media community around Walt Disney World and Universal Parks content. The main host, Molly, is super fun and someone you feel like you'd want to hang out with on vacation. Their channel started a couple months ago and has already amassed a big fanbase. I would love a vid showcasing all the fun stuff the hosts do as they go around the parks. Any material is fine, though feel free to skip Wizarding World content.
